    PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

    KK FRESH PRODUCE EXPORTERS LIMITED.

    FARMERS’ SENSITIZATION MEETINGS

Horticulture is one of the fastest growing sectors in Uganda and was listed as a strategic export in the Uganda Strategic Exports Programme. The sector employs a large number of people and horticulture exports are worth US$ 50 million per year.

Uganda horticultural farmers and exporters risk losing the lucrative EU market over failure to meet set standards by the European Union (EU). The EU has warned all countries to ensure all produce meant for the market is free of harmful pests and meets the “required minimum residual levels”.

Exporters are faced with the problem of sustaining exports due to changes in climate which affect the production capacity of farmers. The unexpected prolonged drought and unreliable rainfall patterns in the country cause losses in production.

The changing weather conditions plus pests and diseases affect the farmers’ produce which eventually lowers their productivity. The pesticides available on the market are of poor quality which affects crop harvest and yet low quality produce is not accepted on the export market.

Whereas many farmers are interested in profitable agriculture, they lack skills in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Many farmers still apply rudimentary methods of farming that are not economically viable.

Furthermore crop losses in Uganda have remained unacceptably high throughout the post harvest system, right from harvest, on farm and off farm transport, drying, and storage, processing and marketing. Farmers loose between 30%-40% of their produce during post harvest. The losses are attributed to lack of technical information and knowledge on appropriate post harvest handling that optimize crop quality, quantity and timely delivery.

KK Fresh Produce Exporters Limited provides a huge opportunity for fresh horticultural produce and is currently ranked as the leading exporter in Uganda. The company has organised farmers’ sensitization meetings as follows:
